Granna Camp {Memphis, TN–Custom Portraiture}
Posted on July 23, 2010
What a blessing these boys have! Each summer all the cousins (who are potty-trained) get to come and spend a week with their Granna and Pops.
I had the pleasure of photographing them yesterday.
They all had matching Granna Camp t-shirts with their names embroidered on the back. (too cute!)

Thanks for letting me join your morning!

Custom Portraiture Versus In-Store Studio {Memphis, TN–Custom Portraiture}
Posted on July 15, 2010
We’ve all done it. We’ve all taken the coupons out of the parenting magazines and the coupon mailers for JCPenney Portrait Studios, or Wal-Mart, or Olan Mills and gone to get our memories preserved. And this works.
I have several shots of my kids standing on the white backdrops looking uncertainly at a photographer while the next family peers in from the waiting room.
I’m also not ignorant that these type of photo sessions may be all your budget can afford at this point. But let me show you some of the differences between a Portrait Studio and Custom Portraiture.
Here is your typical studio shot. (white seamless backdrop and no additional edit) I call these my “SOOC” or Straight Out Of Camera.

Now look at how my additional edits (which are included in your session fee) change the image.

Most portrait studios do not offer this type of special attention to your photos in their bargain packages. And if they DO offer it, you are now paying the same (or higher) prices as you would if you had gone with a custom portraiture artist.
But what the in-store studios cannot give you, are images like this:

Now this image shows me more of this little girl’s personality. In addition to the greater dimension in the photograph due to the depth in the lighting.
I have also been surprised to find that print prices, once you get away from the packages where you get one pose in multiple sizes for $15, are actually quite expensive. The Picture People list their prices here. And every touch-up you request cost extra (black and white, sepia, a border, ect…)
During the session your experience will be different as well. In a studio, you walk in and they start shooting. Many times there is another customer waiting. You are rushed. Children do not do particularly well in these situations. And who wants photos of a melt-down?
However, when you hire a custom portraiture artist, you have the photographer’s undivided time.
I may not begin shooting right away. I take the time to get to know you, your family, your interests. If your child is shy, or cranky, we play games until everyone is comfortable. I am here to capture your family as you really are. Not to put you in some rigid unnatural situation.
Custom portraiture captures a more realistic glimpse of the person or family being photographed. Find someone who’s style you love and make it a goal to have some great photos of the people you love proudly displayed in your home.
Standouts really do… stand out! {Memphis, TN, Custom Portraits}

I’ve been eying this product for a while. The nice, clean lines… the ability to avoid having to find the perfect frame… the affordability compared to gallery wraps…
So I purchased two for my home.
Standouts.
I had both of these photographs printed on metallic paper. The colors are GORGEOUS!!!
Now, with Standouts, you get your choice of white or black for the edges. I felt like both my images were better suited for white borders.
I LOVE THESE!!!
Super light-weight, they come ready-to-hang straight from the box! You can’t get photos up on your walls faster!
I quickly snapped a few images of my new Standouts (mainly because my sister-in-law wanted to see what I was talking about).
These are my newest products. Thanks, Christina Staggs for convincing me to order them.
Below is the 10×10 Standout that is hanging in my kitchen:
I hadn’t decided where to put this next one at the time I took the photo. But at 8×8, it is perfect for setting on a side-table or a bookshelf. Here you see it free-standing from the front and the side.

Kiser Kids!–{You’ve Been Shot!}–Custom Children’s Portraits
Posted on July 3, 2010
While in Dallas I had the opportunity to play with the Kiser kids. Murphy was against us. First our shoot site ended up being closed and then the chill baby girl decided to break character and be unhappy the. whole. time.
But never fear… their cuteness overcame the obstacles.
Here’s your sneak-peek:
See, Julie… a preview with NO sucker.
